The development of the retail stores into residential area in the late 1980s contributed to the agglomeration. On the demand side, the opening of stores by young designers was found to have been supported by a prominent apparel manager in Harajuku since the 1990s. The agglomeration affects the process of apparel production in two ways. First, retail stores are using consumers as a design source. Second, retail stores outsource the manufacturing process to overseas factories, mainly in China.
