Subjectivity and Diversity of Individuals on Construction of the Body: Focusing on Clothing and Tattooing

The research project analyses how people in French Polynesia have differentiated each other according to the class, gender, age, occupation, ethnicity, and residential area, by examining the materiality of tattooing (tools and inks) and that of clothing (materials and styles). By analyzing the practice of tattooing and clothing from the early European contact to the present, the project investigates various processes of corporeal construction in Tahiti. With social changes through colonialization, modernization, and globalization, the materiality of tattooing and clothing has been dramatically changed, which influenced the practice of tattooing and production and wearing of clothing. Consequently, the construction of individual corporeality has become varied accordingly.
