2011年3月11日に発生した東日本大震災により、研究対象地域として情報収集を進めていた宮城県牡鹿郡女川町が津波で大きな損害を受けた。3月11日の震災発生時点では、女川町と研究協定を結び脳ドック検診の結果を保有していたが、要介護認定情報については4月以降に収集予定であった。要介護認定情報は津波ですべて喪失したとの報告を女川町より受けた。また脳ドックを受診した調査対象者の多くが津波により亡くなってしまった。要介護認定の発生状況を調査するのが本研究の目的であるため、科研費研究を女川町を対象地域として当初の計画のまま遂行することが困難になった。高齢者における無症候性脳所見の研究は重要性の高い研究であり、検討する対象を変えてでも研究を継続することが必要であると考えた。このため、同様の研究計画を遂行するのに適した集団として大迫コホートを検討対象として研究を遂行できないか、大迫研究の研究代表者と交渉を進めた。この結果、共同で検討を進めることで了承いただいた。平成23年度は倫理申請の修正・研究遂行に必要なデータの確認と、それらのデータをどのようにハンドリングしていくかの確認、データベースサーバーの維持・改修を行ってきた。また10月には、震災の特別枠として設けられた文科省科研費の申請枠に、研究計画を新たに練り直して若手Bの研究として再申請を行い、申請が採択された。新たな研究計画では、単純な疫学研究のみでなく画像統計解析も含む予定で、それらに必要となる機器についても新規に取りそろえた。
