U.S.-Japan Relations and Asian Regionalism: the 1970s

The purpose of the research is to examine the conflict and cooperation between the United States and Japan over the process of shaping a new regional order in Post-Vietnam Southeast Asia. In both countries, two distinct approaches existed among the major policy makers: the regionalist approach and the Cold War approach. The regionalist approach stressed the US-China-Soviet Union relationship's limited influence on the countries of the region. Countries such as Vietnam were perceived as being highly independent from Soviet control due to its strong nationalism. In contrast, the Cold War approach stressed the significance of the US-China-Soviet Union balanec of power and viewed the regional conflict as the reflection of the competition among these major powers. Throughout the period covered by this research(1969-1979), Tokyo and Washington exchanged their views closely, even though they differed in their positions on some crucial issues such as aid policy toward Vietnam.
