A Study on Sino-Japanese Cultural Exchange Focusing on Li Shutong (Master Hongyi)

本文以李叔同（弘一法师，1880-1942）在日本和中国的文化活动及其与周边知识界的关系为中心，考察了世纪初的中日文化交流。1905年至1911年，李叔同在日本学习美术、音乐、戏剧等西方文化，回国后将其传入中国。他对中国的现代化产生了巨大的影响。然而，他突然决定出家，震惊了中国文坛，因为他们认为这是对现代文化的否定。弘一法师虽然很难得到同时代知识分子的理解，但他对中日佛教交流的发展也做出了实质性的贡献。

Focusing on the cultural activities of Li Shutong (Dharma Master Hongyi, 1880-1942) in Japan and China, and the relationship with his surrounding intelligentsia in both countries, we examined about the Sino-Japanese cultural exchange in early 20th century. Li Shutong studied western culture, such as art, music and drama in Japan from 1905 to 1911, and passed it to China after his return. He had a great influence on China's modernization. However, his sudden decision to become a monk shocked Chinese literary society, since they regard it as a denial of modern culture. Though it was difficult for Master Hongyi to get the comprehension of his contemporary intellectuals, he also made a substantial contribution to the development of Sino-Japanese Buddhism exchange.
