Japan, under its grassroots technical cooperation has supported Social Businesses through capacity building of rural people in Sri Lanka. This study investigated the effectiveness of such SBs by analysing their impact on rural poor and the challenges they posed.Japanese volunteers facilitated capacity building of rural women to produce market-oriented products using their own resource endowments. This resulted in a higher income for villagers due to improved access to local and foreign markets. Human resource development; collective behaviour of entrepreneurs; networking with other organizations; financial/ material gains; improvement of micro financing systems maintained by the SBs; improvement of technology used were the capacities built through SBs. The dependency syndrome; lack of management know-how; instability of the market; inability to sustain independent management of the project upon the return of Japanese volunteers were major challenges of these SBs.

日本在其基层技术合作下，通过斯里兰卡农村人民的能力建设支持社会企业。这项研究通过分析这类小型企业对农村穷人的影响及其带来的挑战，调查了它们的有效性，日本志愿人员促进农村妇女的能力建设，以便利用自己的天赋资源生产面向市场的产品。这使村民的收入增加，因为他们更容易进入当地和外国市场。人力资源开发;企业家的集体行为;与其他组织的联网;财政/物质收益;改进附属机构维持的小额供资系统;改进所使用的技术是通过附属机构建立的能力。依赖综合症;缺乏管理知识;市场不稳定;在日本志愿人员返回后，无法维持对项目的独立管理是这些附属机构面临的主要挑战。
