A Farinocystis neogregarine parasite was isolated from mass-reared colonies of the West Indian sweet potato weevil at the facility of Okinawa Prefectural Plant Protection Center (OPPPC) in 2004. First, development and life cycle of the Farinocystis in host weevils were investigated. At 1 day to 2 days post-inoculation, the sporozoites migrated to the fat body and then developed to represent a merogony, gametogony, and sporogony during its complex life cycle. Second, a simple method for detection of the Farinocystis infection in OPPPC weevil colonies was successfully developed. Third, the coleopteran insects were inoculated with the Farinocystis oocysts and its infection was examined using PCR. The result suggested that the Farinocystis has a very narrow host range. Lastly, artificial excystation of the Farinocystis oocysts was investigated, and it was revealed that the procedures with a chemical treatment following a physical grinding were effective for the oocyst excystation.

2004年，在冲绳县植物保护中心（OPPPC）的设施中，从大量饲养的西印度甘薯象鼻虫菌落中分离到一种新谷粉囊线虫寄生虫。首先，研究了寄主象甲中粉囊原虫的发育和生活史。接种后1 ~ 2天，子孢子迁移到脂肪体，然后发育为部分生殖、配子生殖和孢子生殖。第二，建立了一种简便的检测OPPPC象甲群体中粉囊菌感染的方法。第三，用粉囊藻卵囊接种鞘翅目昆虫，用PCR检测其感染情况。结果表明，粉囊原虫的寄主范围很窄。最后，对粉囊藻卵囊的人工脱囊进行了研究，结果表明，在物理研磨后进行化学处理的程序对卵囊脱囊是有效的。
