This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of preoperative 2 hrs restraint stress on microglial activation, an expression of interleukin-1beta in hippocampus and spatial working memory after surgery in adult and aged rats. Spatial working memory was affected after surgery in a 6-8 months adult rat undergoing preoperative 2 hrs restraint stress. In a 18-20 months aged rat, surgery itself induced postoperative impairment of spatial working memory. However, the impairment continued even on the 14 postoperative days in an aged rat undergoing preoperative 2 hrs restraint stress. Those were associated with microglial activation and an increased expression of interleukin-1beta on neuron in hippocampus.
