大阪大学の所蔵する『緒方洪庵の薬箱』は、当時の医療文化や洪庵の医療に対する姿勢を現代に伝える重要な文化財である。薬箱の現状を調査し、次世代に伝えるための記録・保存法の検討を行うとともに、当時の知識の現代医療への応用を目指した。1.大阪大学所蔵の生薬標本の詳細調査を行った。独国メルク社製生薬標本約280点、米国イーライリリー社製生薬標本216点および津村研究所製和漢薬標本236点について写真撮影により現状のデジタル化を行い、ラベル情報をExcelにてリスト化した。2.緒方洪庵の薬箱について、非破壊的調査としてデジタルマイクロスコープにより基原同定に必要な微細構造の観察を行った。また、上記項目で調査した蒐集者の背景が明らかで基原植物の信頼性が高い生薬標本と比較することにより、基原植物の同定を行った。3.江戸期を中心とした医療文献を精読し、当時の流通状況や処方集等での使用実態を調査することで、医療文化面から上記同定の裏付けを行った。4.上記医療文献および日本薬局方における生薬の収載状況を調査し、緒方洪庵の薬箱の内容生薬と統計学的に比較することで、緒方洪庵の治療観の考察を行った。その結果、洪庵の薬箱には東洋医学的背景をもつ生薬と西洋医学的背景をもつ生薬を双方とも収載されており、東西の医療文化において中間的性質を示すことを明らかにした。これは、洪庵が伝統的な漢方の知識に加え、西洋の当時の最新医薬品を治療に用いていたとするこれまでの説の裏付けとなる。今回用いた生薬標本は標本が作製された当時(1920-50年代)に医療現場で用いられていた高品質生薬そのものである。こうした歴史標本は、現代医療における生薬標準化のタイプ標本となりえる。標本の形態比較への利用や生薬収載状況のデータの統計学的解析など理系的手法を用いることで、従来の薬史学的検証を裏付ける、文理融合的解析を実現した。
