本年度には医療宣教師のアイデンティティ、中医学に対する認識について考察した。1)2011年9月に明清史学会において口頭発表した内容を修正・補完し、2012年韓国の学術雑誌『明清史研究』37集に掲載した。2)2012年9-10月に上海での史料調査を行った。上海档案館では、中国医療伝道協会の内部資料や档案史料を集めた。上海図書館では、電子資料として公開されている医療宣教師関係の雑誌や民国時代の医学雑誌を収集することができた。3}医療宣教師のアイデンティティー医療と伝道の間:本章では医療と伝道のどちらを優先するかという問題をめぐる医療宣教師の論争を紹介し、1900年代以降医療と伝道が分離分離され、医療宣教師は主に医師としての役割を果たすようになったことを明らかにした。医療と伝道の分離は、中国医療伝道協会の役割、ひいては中国での医療活動にも大きな変化をもたらしたのである。史料としては、医療宣教師が残した文章及び全中国プロテスタント宣教師大会の報告書を主に利用した。4)医療宣教師の中薬に対する認識:最初医療宣教師が中薬を研究した理由は、中国伝統医学を深く理解するためというより、薬の不足といった医療活動の現実的な問題を解決するためであった。ところが1920年代に入ってから、中国人による中薬研究が活発になり、中薬の新たな可能性を発見すると、医療宣教師の中薬に対する認識も大きく変化する。本章では、医療宣教師の中薬に対する認識の変化、それに影響を与えた中国人の中薬の研究活動を分析することで、西洋医学と中国伝統医学の相互作用の一面を明らかにしたい。
