项目摘要

今年度は、本研究課題の軸をなす三人の中、阪谷素と中村正直の思想の分析に順次取り組む形で研究を遂行した。とりわけ年度の前半期は、阪谷素(1822～1881)の最晩年の思想に重点を置いて研究を進めた。国立国会図書館に所蔵されている『阪谷朗盧関係文書』や『阪谷朗鷹先生書簡集』『郎底先生宛諸氏書簡集』をもとに、晩年の阪谷の問題関心を浮き彫りにする作業に集中した。従来、彼の明六社との関わりが専ら注目を浴びてきたが、本研究によって、『明六雑誌』の停刊(明治八(1875)年十一月)以降の多数の知識人団体における活動の内容(「民権」確立の考究)を明らかにすることができた。全集が存在しない中村正直の場合、『敬宇文集』が主な史料を収録はしているが、それは一部に過ぎず、静嘉堂文庫における自筆本を含めた史料の検討が必要だった。同時に、明治期の中村が雑誌に寄稿した論説などの収集を並行したoその上で、まず、先行研究において十分な分析が行われなかった幕末期の中村の姿を、その論策を主な題材として用いつつ、徳川幕府直轄の昌平坂学問所の儒者というアイデンティティを軸に捉え直す作業に取り組んだ。次に、イギリス留学、そして幕府瓦解以降、明治五(1872)年までの静岡時代における彼の思想課題の分析に取り組んだ。その結果、「敬天愛人」によって語られるキリスト教理解の問題と、『自由之理』(原著:On Liberty, J.S.Mill, 1859)における人民の「自主」問題との繋がりをテクスト内在的な分析によって明らかにできた。つまり、中村においてキリスト教は、今日的な宗教概念とは異なる、儒学的枠組みから理解した「教」の一環として位置づけられ、それをもとに、西洋政治思想の文脈とは異なる1iberty(「自主」「自由」)の理解を持つようになったのである。従来の研究において、両者の間に存する連関性の構造が、論理的かつ具体的に論じられることなく言及されてきた所、本研究によって解明できた。
