In order to develop a chiral catalyst-ionic liquid reaction system as an zero-emission asymmetric reaction system, both a reaction solvent and a chiral catalyst of which can be completely and simultaneously recovered and reused, novel diionic chiral rare earth metal complexes were succeeded in synthesizing, which had a high affinity for ionic liquids, and could work as an effective Lewis acid catalyst for the enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction in an ionic liquid. After the reaction, the catalysts completely remained in the ionic liquid in extracting the products and the unreacted substrates with organic solvent, and the ionic liquid involving the catalyst could be successfully reused for the next reaction. Also, investigations about structure activity correlation between asymmetric catalysis and catalysts or ionic liquids used provided new insights to develop new highly functional catalysts.
