It is highly essential to understand the polymer/metal interfacefor achieving high utilization of electrocatalyst surface in polymer electrolyte fuelcells. In the present study, we prepared and studied model polymer/metal interfaces withsingle-crystal electrodes. Pt-Co and Pt-Ru alloy single-crystals were made by a novelmethod. Changes in cyclic voltammograms at the single-crystal electrodes revealedalloying effects on hydrogen adsorption and surface oxidation processes. Surfacestructures of the electrodes were characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy andX-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after adsorption of model polymers. It wasfound that the electrochemical behavior of the single-crystal electrodes was changed bythe adsorption of model polymers.
