本研究の目的は、現代における聖地または巡礼地における消費と信仰との相互関係を通じて民衆宗教性の特徴を明らかにすることである。このため研究の焦点を3つに絞り研究を継続してきた。本年度は、東欧の民衆宗教性との比較により、両地域の民衆宗教性の類似性または差異の解明を目標とした。本年度は、日本における聖地の様相を把握するために、長崎県において実地調査を行った。カクレキリシタンの集落である平戸市根獅子町において住民の聞き取り調査を行い、殉教祭、長崎の教会群の観光資源化などについての認識・意見を聞くことができた。聞き取り調査に際しては、地元の関係者の調査に対する同意を十分にとった上で行うことに留意した。外海地区では、枯松神社祭に参加した際に、世界遺産に関して平戸市とは異なった住民の姿勢を観察することができた。これらの実地調査により、長崎の教会群をめぐり、県・観光業界・地元住民といったいくつかの機関・集団が持つ様々な思惑が浮き彫りとなった。ヨーロッパとの比較に関しては、スロベニアでの研究を推進した。観光会社のツアーリーダーなどのスタッフや司祭や巡礼者などへのインタビューを行うとともに、メジュゴリエなど巡礼・聖地関係の資料を収集した。さらにスティチナ修道院で宗教実践の観察と院長へのインタビューを行うことができた。これらの実地調査にもとづき、ヨーロッパの巡礼地においても民衆宗教的な要素を見出すことができ、消費と宗教の普遍的な結びつきを確認することができた。この研究は日本の宗教を研究するのみではなく、ヨーロッパの宗教学が見逃してきた民衆宗教性という視点を提起し、近代化における宗教の役割といったより大きなテーマにも寄与できると考えられる。
