本研究の目的は、起業家が起業機会の認識において、起業意図や行為を正統化するメカニズムに着眼することにより、事業機会の発見と認識のプロセスについて再検討することである。起業家が起業機会において認識する正統性は認知的行為であると理解できる。起業家の正統性の認知は、起業家が埋め込まれている文脈の影響を受けて、自らの行為に独自の意味づけを行う。調査では、起業家がどのような認知的プロセスを経て事業機会を認識し、自らの意図と行為を正統化しているのかについて検討する。その際に、既存の制度に対抗するために制度的プレッシャーに戦略的に対応したり、自らが埋め込まれている文脈において意図と行為を社会的に構成していくことにより、起業家は事業機会を認識し、認知的正統性を獲得していると推察された。本研究における理論的検討では、分析フレームとして制度的アプローチ（特に、新制度派組織理論）と社会構成主義を検討してきた。その結果、本研究の成果として参照することができる、制度的起業家研究における社会的起業家の役割について言及している著書（単著）1冊を出版することができた。結論として、制度的起業家は、既存の制度に対抗するために新しい制度そのものを創出したり、自らが埋め込まれている文脈において意図や行為を社会的に構成していることが分かった。その後の研究においては、社会的起業家に関して利用できる資料の収集を行ってきた。全国紙四紙の新聞記事データベースを利用し、社会的起業家に関連するキーワード検索を行った結果、合計で2074件の記事を検索し、データベース化した。今後の課題として、テキストマイニング技術により内容分析し、制度的文脈に埋め込まれている社会的起業家の意図や行為について解析することや、社会的起業家の正統性の認知が事業機会の認識に及ぼす影響をモデル化することが考えられる。
