The purpose of this study was to elucidate the fate of neural crest-derived cells in the skin and their roles in skin wound healing. Using the two strain of mice in which neural crest-derived cells specifically express GFP (P0-Cre+ flox-CAT-EGFP mice, Wnt1-Cre+ flox-CAT-EGFP mice), we have shown that they differentiate into melanocytes, dermal sheath cells, dermal papilla cells, neurons, and adipocytes. During wound healing process, there were GFP-positive endothelial cells, myofibroblasts, and keratinocytes, demonstrating that neural crest-derived cells are stimulated by some wound signal and contribute to skin wound healing.
