To understand the evolutionary origin of the vertebrate head, we examined the developmental mechanisms of amphioxus and vertebrates. We found that during the gastrula stage, regional domain markers of the dorsal mesoderm were co-expressed in amphioxus while these markers shifted heterotopically in vertebrate embryos. These findings suggest that the vertebrate head evolved from an amphioxus like ancestor by heterotopic shift for anterior/posterior direction.

为了了解脊椎动物头部的进化起源，我们研究了文昌鱼和脊椎动物的发育机制。我们发现，在原肠胚阶段，背中胚层的区域域标记在文昌鱼中共表达，而这些标记在脊椎动物胚胎中异位转移。这些结果表明，脊椎动物的头部是由文昌鱼类祖先通过前/后方向的异位移位进化而来的。
