Das literaturwissenschaftliche Projekt thematisiert einerseits die diskursive Stigmatisierung von Personengruppen, die in Folge der Übertretung von Rechtsnormen ausgegrenzt werden (Kriminalisierung); andererseits befasst es sich mit der Erfahrung dieser Stigmatisierung, die häufig zu einer neuen Identitätskonstitution führt, und in erster Linie mit dem Ort der Ausgrenzung, dem Gefängnis, assoziiert ist. Literarisch werden diese Prozesse in Zuschreibungsdiskursen, Metaphern und imagologischen Entwürfen bzw. Strategien der Sympathiewerbung oder Sympathielenkung greifbar.Ziele des Projekts sind: · die Beschreibung und Analyse diskursiver Ausgrenzungspraktiken sowie der Markierung sozialer Identität in literarischen und nichtliterarischen Gattungen der englischen Literatur (Roman, Drama, Film, Journalismus, Autobiographie, Hagiographie, kriminologischer Fachdiskurs), soweit sie den `Verbrecher´ charakterisieren; · die Analyse literarischer Topoi, von Metaphorik und visueller Darstellung (auch im Film), soweit diese die diskursiven Ausgrenzungen ergänzen bzw. konterkarieren; · die historische Analyse dieser Stilmittel am Beispiel ausgewählter Genre von der Spätrenaissance bis zur Moderne, inklusive Filmanalysen, da der Film im 20. Jahrhundert die wichtigste Quelle für Alltagsvorstellungen von Gefängnisrealität ist; · die Untersuchung des Einflusses der Tiermetaphorik auf den Wissenschaftsdiskurs, besonders der positivistischen Kriminologie. · Schließlich will das Projekt die theoretischen Positionen Foucaults und des New Historicism bezüglich des Verhältnisses von Macht und Diskurs entscheidend modifizieren.The literary studies section of the Norm, Law and Criminalization project considers the following topics. This project analyses, on one hand, the discursive stigmatization of groups of people, who are excluded due to their having transgressed norms of law (criminalization). On the other hand, the project explores experiences of stigmatization. These experiences, which are associated with the prison as the site of exclusion, often lead those who are stigmatized to create new identities. Thus discourses generate objective and subjective social identities. These processes are made tangible in literature by means of literary techniques such as discourses of attribution, metaphors and imagological projections as well as strategies for attracting and directing reader/audience sympathy.The goals of this project are:· to describe and analyse discursive practices; · to delineate social identities in literary and nonliterary genres of English literature (novel, drama, film, journalism, autobiography, hagiography, criminological discourse) to the degree that these genres characterize the "criminal" · to explore the literary topoi, metaphorics and visual representations (also in film) of these identity configurations and the way in which they complement or counteract discursive exclusions; · to analyse the stylistic techniques delineated above historically on the basis of chosen genres from the late Renaissance to the modern period, including analyses of film, since this genre became, in the twentieth century, the most important source for ordinary perceptions of the reality of prison; · to study the influence of animal metaphors on scientific discourse, particularly on the discourse of positivist criminology; · finally, to modify substantially the theoretical position of Foucault and New Historicism with regard to the relation between power and discourse.
