近年は東南アジアでも水中考古学の発展が目覚ましく、多く沈船の発見が報告されているが、資料の整理・公開や分析の多くは初歩的なものにとどまっており、まだ個別研究の精密化が必要な段階にある。本研究は、最近の注目される沈船のひとつ、中部ベトナム・クアンガイ省のビンチャウ沖から引き揚げ・採集された遺物と沈船地点についての基礎的研究を行おうとしたものである。代表の西村は長年ベトナムで研究をおこない、城郭遺跡や陶磁器の研究など陸上の考古学調査・研究で多くの成果を上げてきたが、今回は水中考古学に手を伸ばし、インド系文字のエキスパートである青山を分担者として、またベトナムでの長年の協力者であるLe Thi Lienの協力も仰いで、現場の調査、陶磁器資料の化学的研究や墨書銘分析などを含む、総合的かつ文理融合的な調査と、資料群の目録化などを計画した。初年度の研究として、まず現地(ベトナム中部のダナン)での資料整理と研究打ち合わせ、九州国立博物館での関連資料の調査などを実施したのだが、代表者が6月に事故死したため、計画廃止のやむなきに至った。このため、研究成果の発表はまったくおこなわれていない。
