我が国の新規航空会社であるAIRDO、スカイマーク、スカイネットアジア、及びスターフライヤーの４社について、路線新規参入後の運賃設定の変化を産業組織論並びに計量経済学の視点から分析した。それとともに、これら４社に対抗する大手航空会社である日本航空と全日本空輸の運賃設定行動も明らかにし、運賃の変化に伴う消費者余剰の変化をも明らかにしている。そのために、まず路線ごとの航空会社の限界費用を計量経済学的手法により算出し、そのデータを用いて逆疑似供給関数と需要関数とを連立させて同時方程式を推定する手法をとった。その中で、逆疑似供給関数の外生変数として、新規航空会社４社の新規参入後４年間、合計１６のダミー変数を導入し各年度の運賃の変化を考察し、更に運賃の変化を初年度をベースとしてワルド検定により検証した。また需要関数には新規航空会社に対抗する大手航空会社の４年分のダミー変数を導入し、大手航空会社の運賃の変化も考察した。その結果、新規航空会社のうちAIRDOとスカイマークは初年度は大幅に運賃を引き下げて競争を行うものの、２年目以降は徐々に運賃を上げていく傾向が観察された。後発のスカイネットアジアとスターフライヤーは、AIRDO及びスカイマークのような激しい運賃競争を試みずに、やや低めの運賃を設定する方法で参入していることが確認された。それに対して、大手航空会社がAIRDOとスカイマークに対しては当初激しい運賃設定で競合したものの、新規航空会社が運賃を修復するとともに大手も運賃を上昇させていることが確認された。これに伴い消費者余剰も初年度が最も増加幅が大きく、以後次第に減少していく傾向が確認された。
