国内外の古代寺院とその造営集団に関する資料収集、および研究成果の公表を行った。国内については、各地の古代寺院遺跡を実地踏査し、寺院の立地環境、遺物分布・遺構遺存の現状、周辺の官衙・集落・墳墓・交通路などとの位置関係を現地で確認するとともに、文字資料を含む出土遺物の観察を行った。また、古代寺院遺跡の発掘担当者との意見交換を行い、発掘成果の解釈や今後の発掘調査方針に関する当方の見解を各担当者に伝えた。国内調査で得られた資料や従来からの知見を基に、但馬国分寺跡をはじめとする各地の古代寺院遺跡から一括出土した木簡などの文字資料群についての学術的評価を総括し、兵庫県豊岡市で開催されたセミナーにおいて「出土文字資料からみた古代寺院―但馬国分寺跡出土木簡の研究史から」と題する報告を行った。海外については、中国山東省・河南省・河北省、およびインドへ計２回の海外出張調査を実施し、済南千仏崖磨崖石刻・小南海石窟・南響堂山石窟・臨章仏造像博物館・故宮博物院彫塑館、およびサーンチー仏塔・デリー国立博物館・サールナート考古博物館などで造像（造寺・造塔）銘文調査などを行った。研究成果では、東大寺盧舎那大仏の造営が成功した理由として、官営銅山における国家的採掘によって原料銅が安定的に生産されていたためと論じた学術論文「大仏料銅産出の歴史的前提」を執筆した。また、仏教史研究の最新状況を紹介する概説書において、「古代寺院造営と東アジア」「出土文字資料と古代寺院」の二編を執筆した。
