This project will investigate the temperature-sensitivity of carbon partitioning between dissolved and particulate organic matter during a spring bloom of a natural plankton community. Primary production, degradation and aggregation processes differ regarding their temperature-dependence. Global warming is therefore likely to affect the balance between organic matter source and sink terms in the surface ocean. This can cause a variety of changes regarding the fate of primary produced organic matter and its partitioning between the dissolved and particulate phase in pelagic systems. On the ecosystem level these temperature effects are modulated by several interacting biological and biophysical processes (e.g. substrate and light limitation), which also are likely to display large differences in temperature-sensitivity. To examine the effect of warming on the production and fate of dissolved organic matter at the ecosystem level this project will be conducted as part of a joint mesocosm experiment at the IfM Kiel. Supplementary chemostat and batch cultures experiments will be carried out to examine the effect of nutrient ratios and long-term degradation on the processes described above.
