项目摘要

最終年度に当たる本年度においては、昨年に引き続き聖オーラヴ崇敬の伝播に着目しつつも対象地域をノルウェー近隣諸国(イングランド)に移し、国外での崇敬の在り方について研究を行った。なお、2017年度の成果は西洋中世学会第9回大会(2017年6月)でポスター発表という形で報告した。また、2018年2月25日から二週間の日程で必要な史料調査を大英図書館において行った。イングランドにおける聖オーラヴ崇敬の在り方について、まずは年代記(アングロサクソン年代記等)やイングランドで発給されたチャーターなどを使用し、崇敬伝播の年代の確定を行った。アングロ＝サクソン期の有力者が1050年代に相次いで聖オーラヴに対して教会を奉献した記述が史料から確認できたことから、聖オーラヴの列聖年(1031年)以降、1050年代までをイングランドにおける聖オーラヴ崇敬の伝播年代とした。この年代は近隣諸国の史料から想定できる伝播年代の中ではノルウェー本国に次いで早いものであり、イングランドは近隣諸国における崇敬伝播のさきがけ事例とみなすことが可能である。一方、崇敬の担い手については、史料の記述から司教や伯、時には国王といった社会的上層の人間が主体であったことが判明した。ただし、崇敬への関与が伺われるエクセター司教レオフリックが編纂したといわれる聖務日課書において、教会カレンダー及び聖人連祷に聖オーラヴが登場することから、エクセター司教区においては、より広範囲な身分が崇敬の担い手であったことが想定できる。そして上記の聖務日課書の存在や奉献施設の分布、チャーターから判明した崇敬の担い手(ウェセックス伯夫妻)の本拠地等から、報告者は南イングランド(＝ウェセックス伯支配域)をイングランドにおける聖オーラヴ崇敬の中心地と位置づけた。今後もイングランド地域での崇敬について考察を継続し、成果を論文として発表する予定である。
