Genetics of macular drusen formation in rhesus macaques - Genetik makulärer Drusen beim Rhesusaffen

This project aims at identifying genetic component(s) of macular drusen formation, the initial clinical manifestation of age-related macular degeneration, in a primate model, namely the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaque. The focus will be on candidate genes in the region orthologous to human chromosome 6q14-15, found to be implicated in preceding genetic association studies. These genes will be screened for mutations associated with drusen formation, and their expression will be studied in both affected and non-affected tissues.
