今年度は、ローマ植民市コリントスと周辺都市との具体的なやり取りに焦点を当て、両者の関係性をもとに、帝政前期のギリシアにおけるローマ植民市の位置づけを検討した。対象としたのは近隣の都市アルゴスとコリントスとの関係である。両都市については、ギリシア語書簡の「偽ユリアヌスの書簡第198番」から、1世紀後半から2世紀前半までの時期にローマ伝来の見世物開催とその出費を巡って対立していた事実が知られている。通説はこの見世物を皇帝崇拝行事の一環であったとし、アルゴスの反発を招いたコリントスの徴税が共同負担という名目で課されたものとするが、一方で、皇帝崇拝の否定につながりかねないアルゴスの露骨な反発の理由については十分に説明してこなかった。報告者は、見世物を外来のものとして非難するアルゴスの姿勢に着目し、ギリシア都市によるローマ文化の受容の在り方と、当時のアルゴスの置かれていた文化的環境の検討を通じて、両都市の具体的な関係を明らかにすることを試みた。そこから、見世物自体は比較的早い段階で受容されており、その過程ではローマ文化の中心であった植民市がモデルとして対抗の的とされていたことが、文献史料と考古学史料の分析から読み取れた。また、アルゴスについては、古典期以降のギリシアでその政治的地位を低下させてきた背景と文献史料の分析から、帝政前期の伝統文化をめぐる都市間競争の中にあって、他の有力都市よりも植民市に強いコンプレックスを抱いていた状況が明らかとなった。以上より、コリントスはその植民市としての政治的、文化的優位性から、周辺のギリシア都市の嫉妬や対抗の対象とされやすく、微妙なバランスのもとで双方の関係が成り立っていたという知見が得られた。本研究は帝政期の植民市と支配地域の都市の関係に関するケーススタディとして、植民市の位置づけに関する従来の理解に一石を投じるものとなると考えている。
