项目摘要

本研究は、日本中世を代表する「惣村地域」である近江国・紀伊国について、惣村の形成要因や両地域の特性を解明し、地域社会像を描出することを目的とする。本研究では、惣村文書に村落組織としての「惣」文言が初めて現れたとき、彼らがいかなる状況下にあったのか、その頃の村落にとって何が重要課題であったのかを探るため、その前後の時期における文書の内容と傾向を比較しながら分析した。主なフィールドは近江国の葛川、菅浦、奥嶋・津田、今堀、紀伊国の鞆淵、粉河東などである。その結果、周辺との相論、領主への抵抗など、強い緊張状態、組織的な戦いの必要性を契機として形成された「惣」が存在し、それらは14世紀半ばまでという比較的早い時期に現れたことがわかった。その一方、「惣」が登場する背景に必ずしも強い緊張の経験がみえないケースもあり、それらは14世紀末から15世紀初と、やや遅れて姿を現したことが確認された。本研究では、前者を「戦時の惣村」、後者を「平時の惣村」と呼ぶが、それらの内実をみていくと、両者の間には注目すべき相違があることが明らかになった。すなわち内部規制や全体意識の強さは、より前者において明確であり、戦時の経験、さらにいえば惨禍の記憶が、住民の共同体のあり方を大きく左右したものと考えられる。一方で後者に関して言うならば、それらの「惣」の主眼は仏事・神事の運営にあったことが指摘できる。これは地域の信仰を支えるために役の負担者を確保し、その代価として身分などの保障を与える主体であったことを意味する。このような負担と保障の関係は村落に内在しており、とりわけ祭祀をめぐって階層構造が形成されていた。「戦時の惣村」のように、危機を克服するためにあえて階層構造の平準化が図られることもあるが、そのような契機のなかった「平時の惣村」では、負担と保障の関係に強い意識が向けられていたことが文書からうかがえる。
