平成30年度は、10月1日付で海外大学院学位取得の留学を開始したため、採用を中途辞退することとなったが、大きく分けて2つの課題に取り組み、それぞれ成果を得た。1つ目は、平成29年度に課題の一つ「19世紀後半の中国海域におけるイギリス海軍政策の通時的分析」の発展課題として浮かび上がった、「軍事技術革新の時代におけるイギリス海軍の旧式艦の扱い」について分析を深めた。すなわち、中国海域においても、イギリス海軍の旧式艦が派遣、売却されて海域秩序の維持活動にあたっていたという史実に着目し、そもそも19世紀後半以降の軍事技術革新期において、イギリス海軍は財政的・軍事的に障害となっていたはずの旧式艦とどのように向き合っていたのか、という問いである。旧式艦の扱いについては、2018年8月に渡英し、国立公文書館に所蔵されるイギリス海軍省史料のうち、最も重要な史料群であるADM 1を広く調査し、旧式艦の扱いに関する幅広い論点を得た。すなわち、旧式艦の売却を通した外交、旧式艦の売却とそこに商機を見出した船舶解体業者などの隣接産業の存在や、膨張したイギリス海軍費に対する旧式艦売却による節制、あるいは旧式艦の修理・保全および展示事業といった、軍事史の枠にとどまらない多面的考察の可能性を見出したのである。これらについては、採用辞退後に査読論文の投稿準備を進めた。2つ目は、関連研究としてのデジタル人文学の諸課題である。人文学研究と情報技術の批判的融合により、新たな歴史研究上の問いを生み出すために、個人およびグループ研究によって種々の成果を得た。特に、人文学史資料テクストをコンピュータ可読形式でデータ化する国際的枠組みText Encoding Initiativeに則り、東アジアの歴史史料をマークアップする国立歴史民俗博物館の研究事業に研究協力者として参画し、査読つき英語論文が公開されることが決定した。
