Bringing the Liberal Back in Peacebuilding: Why local involvement in rebuilding post-conflict societies fails to build peace?

Dr. Simangan has advanced her research during the second year of her postdoctoral fellowship. She completed her book manuscript which has been published in January 2019. She argues that liberal peacebuilding fails to build peace because peacebuilding missions departed from the comprehensive and holistic origins of liberal peacebuilding. She promoted her book to her research network in and outside Japan by delivering lectures about her findings, one of which was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo in February 2019.Dr. Simangan attended two international academic conferences to present her research, as planned in the previous year. The first conference was held in Brisbane, Australia in July 2018 and the second one was held in Taipei, Taiwan in November 2018. The papers presented at these conferences have already been submitted to peer-reviewed journals and are now being revised for re-submission.As planned, she conducted fieldworks related to peacebuilding and local involvement. The first one was in Cambodia in May 2018. The second one was in the Philippines in March 2018 where she conducted a preliminary visit to Marawi City for her research on urban peacebuilding. She also spent her time in the Philippines promoting her book through seminars and networking with academics and government officials interested in peace and conflict. With the publication of her book earlier than expected, Dr. Simangan was able to branch out to other research projects related to peacebuilding during the final two months of her fellowship.
