本研究は、日本の前衛的ダンスとして知られる「暗黒舞踏」（以下「舞踏」）の創始者である土方巽（1928-86） を取り上げ、従来別個に論じられてきた彼の舞踏作品と言説を架橋することにより、土方の舞踏論の一貫的理解を目指すものである。土方は単に作品創作へ精魂を注ぐに留まらず、自らの身体に関する絶えざる探求に基づく様々な言説を残しており、この点で彼は従来の日本の踊り手とは異なる特異な地位を占める。こうした探求の結果として1950年代に創始された舞踏は、その動き・姿勢・舞台演出等の独創性により、海外でも「日本的」「オリエンタリズム」といった語のもとに注目されてきた。本研究はこのような「日本的」あるいは「東北的」とされてきた舞踏の身振りを一つの記号として理解し、後期舞踏作品における「東北」の持つ様々な意味をパースの記号論に基づき分類して捉え直すことを通じて、舞踏作品と土方自身の言説を架橋する新しい解釈の枠組みを提示することを試みるものであった。そのためには以下の三つの作業を行った。１　記号現象に関するパースの理論の基礎的な枠組みと、そこで中心的な意味を持つ記号類型、すなわち記号とその対象との関係を分類する「類似記号」「指標記号」「象徴記号」の概念の舞踏解釈上の妥当性を検討する。２　「東北」をめぐる従来の議論、土方の書き残した著書や講演記録、当時の公演映像などを検討することで、舞踏作品に見られる「東北」を「類似」「指標」「象徴」の三つの観点からそれぞれ記述する。３　パースの理論体系における三つの記号類型の相互関係に基づき、「類似」「指標」「象徴」の観点に基づいて記述された三つの「東北」が持ち得る様々な意味の相互関係を明らかにする。以上の作業の成果を、韓国の舞踊芸術学会と演劇会誌に投稿し、それらに基づき、博士論文を執筆した。
