项目摘要

本研究員は当該年度において、博士論文をまとめるため、一年のうちの大半を論文執筆に充てた。その結果、当該年度に短報２本を発表し、さらに原著論文２本も発表間近の段階までまとめつつある。これらの論文ではキリンの仔育て集団に着目し、その社会学的・生態学的重要性を明らかにした。今までにキリンが仔育て集団を形成することは広く知られていたが、1970年代以降彼らの仔育て集団に関する研究は行われてこなかった。そのような背景のもと、本研究員は欧米の研究者がほとんど実施することのなかった徒歩での個体追跡調査方法を取り入れ、これまでに調査が行われてこなかった、タンザニア南西部に広がるミオンボ林に生息するキリンの仔育て集団の機能を明らかにしようとした。キリン研究分野では新規の調査手法を取り入れ、また長期に渡る現地調査を行った結果、緻密な観察を行うことが可能となった。結果、仔育て集団の構成、社会関係、仔達を見守る保護者役の分担制度、さらにはキリンの個々の性格まで把握することに成功した。このような研究は現在までに行われたことがなく、それらを論文という形で社会に還元したことで、キリン社会における仔育て集団の意義を理解する上で重要な役割を果たすはずである。また、飼育下キリンの飼育環境向上にも役立つだろう。さらに、生態学的側面から得られた情報は、キリンやその生息環境の保全という喫緊の課題にも大きく貢献することは間違いない。論文執筆と並行して学会発表を積極的に行い、当該年度中にカナダで開催されたNACCB2018、およびアメリカで開催されたAnimal Behavior 2018に参加した。
