本研究の目的は、13世紀後半から14世紀のメッカ・メディナの学者と巡礼者の交流に基づく学術ネットワークの全体像を明らかにし、このネットワークを通じた定住が両聖地での学者社会の形成に与えた影響を解明することである。年度半ばでの事業廃止に伴い、全ての研究計画を完了することはできなかったが、本年度は、研究成果の発表と、国際学会やワークショップを通じた人脈の構築に努めた。2019年5月13日にドイツのボン大学で行われたワークショップ（Workshop on “Text-Context-Problematic”）において、口頭報告を行った。また2019年6月15日に早稲田大学で行われた国際マムルーク学会（Sixth Conference of the School of Mamluk Studies）において、14世紀に書かれたメディナ史『助言者の忠告』に関する口頭報告を行った。これらの機会を通じて、自らの研究に関するフィードバックを得るとともに、マムルーク朝期の歴史や考古学を専門とする研究者と意見交換を行った。2019年9月にはエジプトのカイロで2週間程度の史料調査を行った。写本研究所で、同国の国立図書館に所蔵されている『助言者の忠告』のマイクロフィルムを始めとする写本を閲覧するなど、必要なデータを収集した。また9月6日から8日にカイロのアメリカン大学で行われたイスラーム世界の碑文に関する国際学会（Inscriptions from the Islamic World）に参加し、本研究で使用するアラビア語の墓碑に関する知識を深めた。本年度も、昨年度に引き続き研究指導委託制度を利用し、ベルギーのリエージュ大学にてフレデリック・ボダン教授のもと在外研究を行った。マムルーク朝史研究の泰斗である教授の指導を受けたことで、研究が大きく進展した。そのほか、前年度までの研究成果の一部として、メッカの学者名家の姻戚関係に関する論文が公刊された。
