これまでの研究から、ブータン社会において、結婚しない理由を信仰心によって説明するシングル女性が存在することが明らかになった。彼女たちは社会的にも、出家と在家の「はざま」の存在として位置づけられていた。ここから、ブータン社会では女性のライフコース選択において、出家／結婚という二者択一の問題にならない第三の選択肢、「在家であっても尼僧としてシングルとして生きる」という準制度が構築されている可能性が考えられる。本研究では、こうしたシングル女性を中心に据えつつ、「一般的な」既婚女性や出家して尼僧となった女性の生活世界をも見直し、ブータン女性のライフコースを丹念に見ることで、「女性がシングルとして生きる」ということが逸脱にならない社会のありようを明らかにすることを目的としている。この目的を達成するために、昨年までに、現地語を使用した綿密な聞き取り調査と資料収集を実施した。長期フィールド調査が困難であったブータン王国において着実にラポールを築き、現代ブータン女性のライフコース選択についての基本的なデータを蓄積した。本年度は、前年度に引き続きブータン王国において長期フィールド調査を実施した。農村部、都市部、それぞれにおいてシングル女性、出家者、そして既婚女性のライフヒストリーを収集した。また、女性たちの語りと生活実践・宗教実践を観察し、彼女らの日常的思想や、彼女らと地域社会の人々との関係を探求した。また、帰国後は本研究課題の最終年度として、南アジアにおける女性の宗教実践とライフコース選択をめぐる理論的視座と、世帯調査と聞き取り調査、参与観察を合わせた事例分析をまとめた。研究成果の発表としては、長期フィールド調査で得た知見をネパール・ヒマーラヤ研究会で発表した。次年度は国際的な場での研究成果の発表、刊行を予定しており、それに向けての準備を着実に進めることができている。
