昨年度着手した、乳児に対する視覚的注意に及ぼすオキシトシンの影響を調べる研究を継続した。我々の先行研究ではチンパンジーが乳児をよく注視することが明らかになったが、これがチンパンジーの養育行動を反映するものとして位置付けられるのかは不明である。養育行動を調節する内分泌としてオキシトシンが知られており、ヒトにオキシトシンを投与すると乳児刺激への反応性が上がる。チンパンジーの乳児選好が養育行動に関連しているのであれば、オキシトシン投与によってチンパンジーも乳児への注視時間がさらに長くなると推測された。チンパンジーに対してオキシトシン、生理食塩水のいずれかの経鼻投与をおこなったのち、同種の母子の刺激を呈示し、アイトラッキングでおとなと乳児の顔の双方に対する注視時間を測定した。しかしながら、生理食塩水投与に比べたときのオキシトシン投与の影響は確認できなかった。また、我々の先行研究でチンパンジーはヒトと同様におとなの顔の弁別よりも乳児顔の弁別のほうが困難であることがわかっていたが、その原因が何であるのかがわかっていなかった。そこで、顔弁別のしやすさに乳児の顔形態や顔色がどのように影響するかを調べる研究をおこなった。結果、チンパンジーが乳児顔の弁別成績がおとな顔に比べて劣るのは乳児の顔色が原因であり、乳児顔でも顔色をおとなと同様に操作することで弁別成績が向上することがわかった。
