本研究では、次の３つの方法で「薬ケン（牛偏に健）度」にアプローチした．(1)一次資料の翻訳：『パーリ律』『四分律』『五分律』『根本説一切有部毘奈耶薬事』『十誦律』の「薬ケン度」および『摩訶僧祇律』のパラレルな部分の翻訳を遂行した．(2)因縁譚の内容精査：(1)の翻訳に基づき、各律が記す因縁譚に含まれる食事や医療に関する具体的内容を明らかにした．(3)「下位分類による各律の比較分析」：因縁譚を「医学関係・食事関係」に大分類し、さらに「処方薬・常備薬・医療処置・食品・食事作法など」という小分類で規定を整理した．以上，各テキストにみる相違点を分析し、共通部分や特定の部派の特徴などを明確にした．本研究では，新たな試みとして、考古・美術史資料（既刊の発掘報告書のほか、仏教遺構や博物館における実地調査に基づく資料収集）を積極的に活用し、より実証的な考察を目指した．特にブドウの記事についてテキストによる特徴が明らかになった．西北インドに存在したとされるテキスト類には多くのブドウに関する記事があるのに対し，南インドに存在したとされるテキストには少なかった．コロナ禍に巻き込まれたため，十分なフィールドワークができなかったことが今後の課題として残った．
