The priority programme "Cellular Metallic Materials" deals with a new class of materials with very low weight, high strength, and superior energy absorption capability. The new materials are expected to find use in structural applications where weight is of particular concern, e.g. in car bodies or portable electronic devices. This requires, however, that present problems in the fabrication will be overcome and the properties will be further improved, the latter falling still short of the theoretical potential at the moment. The new materials owe their outstanding properties to their unique microstructure which is highly porous and foam-like. The goal of the priority programme is to further the understanding of the new materials and to contribute to their optimisation by exploring the relation between processing parameters, microstructure and properties.
