2021年度を最終年度としていた本研究は、2020年度に続いて2021年度も新型コロナウイルス感染症の流行のため外国での調査・研究を実施できなかったので、補助事業期間を1年間延長したが、2022年度も新型コロナウイルス感染症の流行が終息せず、外国での調査・研究を実施できなかった。そのため、さらに1年間、補助事業期間の延長を申請して、承認された。2022年度は国内での研究のみであったが、本研究の主課題のうち、「帝国統合」の問題について昨年度の進展を受けて研究を進めることができ、一定の成果があった。ローマ帝国の支配領域のうち、帝国西半属州、とくにガリア属州の北半分、いわゆる「ガリア・コマタ」地域の「統合」に関しては、先行研究による説明に疑問を持ち、史料と研究史を精査して、この地域の政治統合に関する従来説の根拠が不備であると考えるに至った。1世紀から3世紀までを見通し、現在の考古学的な情報に照らして抽出できるこの地域の個性・多様性を勘案すると、「ローマ化」の進展とともにこの地域でも政治統合が進んだとの説明は明らかに正確ではないことが判明した。この帝国西半属州に関する問題の検討は1つの事例に過ぎないが、政治統合と帝国諸地域が持っている個性・多様性との関係を解明してこそ、ローマ帝国の世界支配の本質を明らかにできるという認識を改めて示すことができた。今年度の研究はローマ帝国の領域統治の根底に関わる議論を扱ったので、帝国の最盛期と考えられている2世紀の状況の描写にその成果を適用させることができ、この時代のローマ帝国を統治した皇帝マルクス・アウレリウスの生涯を描いた岩波新書『マルクス・アウレリウス　―『自省録』のローマ帝国』に反映させることができた。
