本研究は、古代西アジアに棲息したライオンについて、当時どのような種類のライオンがいたのかを明らかにし、現実的・象徴的なライオンと人の関係、ならびに資源としてのライオンの利用について解明することを目的とする。本年度は、生息したライオンについて決定的な情報を提供し得る動物考古学アプローチの国際的ネットワーク構築に尽力した。6月にスウェーデンで開催された動物考古学の学会において、イランの遺跡から2種類のライオンの骨が発見された報告があり、発表者であるマシュクール氏（パリ自然史博物館）の来日に合わせて、7月21日に第1回ミーティングを行った（出席：本郷・マシュクール・渡辺）。議題として①イランの動物考古学調査における最新の発見、②アッシリア浮彫に描かれたライオン２種、について意見交換し、その席上、翌年パリでライオンに関する学際的な学会が開催予定である情報を提供された。その後、同会議主催者であるパリ・カトリック大学のVassal教授とSpruyt博士に連絡を取り、翌年の会議出席・研究発表について打診したところ、発表申請が受理された。アッシリア王碑文の研究を通して、中アッシリア時代以降、王の狩猟でライオンや子ライオンを生け捕りにし、大規模な飼育・繁殖を行っていたことが明らかになった。この研究成果を「アッシリアにおけるライオンの狩猟・捕獲・飼育について」として、第65回シュメール研究会（2022年6月4日 筑波大学・オンライン併用）で報告した。
