新型うつ病とは，従来のうつ病とは異なる特徴をもつ抑うつ体験反応の総称である．しかし医学用語ではなく，メディアにより命名され医学的に明確な根拠のないままに流布し社会に混乱が生じている．このメディア上の新型うつ病に関する医療情報には医学的根拠を欠くものや個別具体的には適用できない治療法などがあり，実際の医療現場でも混乱を来たすことがある．そこで我々は，医学的観点からみたメディア上における新型うつ病に関する医療情報の検証が必要と考えた．本研究ではメディアとして新聞を取りあげて新型うつ病に関する新聞記事の検索を行い，メディアを通じて大衆へ直接提供される新型うつ病に関する膨大な医療情報の実態を，テキストマイニングの手法を用いて明らかにする．加えて，特に治療法については医療情報の質の評価を行う．なお医療情報の質の評価は精神科医と内科医による医学的観点から行う．当該年度においては新型うつ病に先立ち，まずうつ病に関して再評価を行い，次にうつ病と新型うつ病との関連に言及した医療情報を重点的に評価した．うつ病は一般に抑うつ気分や意欲低下，悲観的思考，思考や行動の遅延，食欲・睡眠の障害などによって特徴付けられる．うつ病に関する記事の解析をテキストマイニングによって行った結果，特徴的な語としては「自殺」が最も多く，題材としてはうつ病の概要やうつ病患者の実態はもとより，自殺や労災に関するものが多かった．自殺と労災の題材は重要な医療情報の提供の観点からも，うつ病が社会に与える影響の観点からも的確に選択されていたと考えられた．しかし，うつ病を構成する主要な症状である睡眠を題材とした記事は少なかった．加えて，新型うつ病との関連について言えば，うつ病と新型うつ病との関連を明確に示した評論はごく少数であった．
