本研究においては、後白河院の蓮華王院宝蔵に納められていたと考えられる「辟邪絵」「地獄草紙断簡（勘当の鬼図）」を中心に、絵巻制作当時の信仰の様態などから改めて作品の制作背景を検討する。本年度においては、「辟邪絵」「地獄草紙断簡（勘当の鬼図）」「病草紙」および「地獄草紙」や「病草紙」の詞書であると指摘される詞書断簡の詞書の解釈を行った。これらの詞書は経典等を直接参照したのではなく、経典と詞書の間に説話があったのではないかと考え、成立年代の近い説話集である『今昔物語集』や『本朝神仙伝』、『古本説話集』を中心に比較検討を行った。比較対象とする説話の分量が十分でなく、説話の諸本間で相違があること、原文が漢文であるものがあること、とくに「辟邪絵」の詞書には「辟邪絵」制作までに成立した文学作品等に用例の見られない文言があることなど、問題や検討事項が多く残る。また前年度に続き、福井県立博物館にて現在明通寺が所蔵する「彦火々出見尊絵巻」の巻一から巻三の三巻を実見した。龍宮の場面についてはすでに金剛山寺「矢田地蔵縁起」の閻魔王庁と近似することが指摘されるが、主人公が裸足で描かれることや龍王の眷属の描写、婿入りの場面や女官たちの支度の様子など、細部に注目して検討を進めたい。
