戦後以降、厚塗りの画面となった日本画は、西洋絵画に拮抗するための造形性が重視されてきたと様々な研究で指摘される。しかし、そのために各作家が模索した画材の用法や機能を具体的に整理した研究は少ない。本研究は、以上の問題意識を基に、今日まで口伝や制作者個人の認識に委ねられてきた戦後日本画における制作実践の諸相を追求することを目的としており、その中でも、これまで通史的研究が主であった堂本印象に焦点を当て調査を進めている。本課題の主たる取り組みは、遺品の実見や画材の物性調査、実践検証であるが、２０２２年度は前年度の成果を踏まえ、実地フィールドワークと画材の簡易検査を行った。フィールドワークによって、堂本印象が特別に製作させた筆のおおよその種類と作者を割り出し、そして、抽象表現期に用いていた絵具について、同一物品の所在や膠と混ぜ合わせる際の留意点、画面定着の難易について関係者から聞き取りを行った。画材の簡易検査にあたっては、光学顕微鏡などを用い、当該の絵具と真黒白群、黒朱、岩黒、カーボンブラック、ランプブラックなどの今日用いられる岩絵の具や西洋顔料とで成分や形状を比較した。堂本印象は文献にて画材の使用法や絵画思想などを多く遺してしているが、今年度の取り組みはそのような具体的な文字情報から展開させたものでなく、草の根的な聞き取り調査から明らかとなった成果であり、今後の研究の進展を支えるうえで重要な位置を占めると期待できる。
