The purposes of this research are to 1) understand the nature of indigenous socio-cultural values and agrarian practices in Okinawa; 2) to examine the land use regulations and the process of restoration and resurgence; 3) to identify the correlation between land-based activism and indigenous rights recognition of the community. This study seeks to link Okinawan cultural politics and social movements and sheds light on practices that constitute a less acknowledged form of indigenous resurgence. The research in FY2022 involved mainly conducting field research. In the summer of 20222, I collected archival materials and conducted interviews in Okinawa. I visited prefectural archives and libraries to collect the necessary historical materials. I was able to locate documents on land seizure by the US military and newspaper articles about peoples’ resistance at that time. Secondly, I asked people who are currently engaged in agriculture to participate in the research and interviewed them. I analyzed the interview data and drafted a paper. Thirdly, I presented the paper at a research meeting at Kanagawa University. With the comments from the audience, I was able to deepen the idea for the construction of the academic book that I am aiming to publish as a research result.
