Scope of the collaborative research centre 463 are investigations of the electronic properties of rare-earth transition-metal compounds and their relationship to crystallographic structure. As hard magnets several of these compounds are relevant for applications in magnetic storage devices, some compounds are superconductors, and others reveal exotic electron correlation phenomena like valence instabilities and heavy Fermion behavior that might be usefull for applications in magneto-electronic devices. Aim of the present research project is the development of new materials with optimized material properties based on a detailed understanding of the underlaying physical mechanisms. Since these intermetallic systems reveal rich and largely unknown phase diagrams a joint material preparation center has been founded that is dedicated to the investigation of the phase diagrams and the preparation of single-phased polycristalline and single-cristalline samples. These samples are studied by means of different experimental techniques like e.g. electron spectroscopies, neutron scattering, and magnetization, heat-capacity and conductivity measurements. Crucial for the understanding of the data is finally a close collaboration between experimentalists and theoreticians that is realized by the participation of several theory groups in the collaborative research centre.
