研究者はこれまでに超高齢社会に向けた安心・安全な歯科治療の実現のために簡便なストレス軽減法について新規開発自律神経活動モニターシステムを用いて検討を行ってきた。その結果、歯科治療中にリラックス効果の高いとされている音楽を聴かせる音楽療法やアロマテラピーを用いることで、交感神経活動が抑制されることを明らかにし、それらの方法にストレス軽減効果があることを示してきた。一方、それらのストレス軽減効果は限局的で効果もやや弱く、さらに持続的に安心・安全な歯科治療を行うためには患者のみならず医療者のストレスを減らすことも重要と考え、VR（仮想現実）やAR（拡張現実）などを複合したXR技術の歯科治療時のストレス軽減への応用について検討を行うことにした。本研究では、最初にXR技術を応用するためにVRゴーグルを用いた仮想空間の提供についてその使用感を中心に他の精神鎮静法との比較を歯科学生を対象として行った。結果は、使用感についてはVRゴーグルは音楽療法や温熱療法に比べて違和感が多く、想定されていた没入感も少ない結果となった。また着脱時のストレスも大きく、重量感についても実際の患者を対象とする前に種々の改善が必要となることが明らかになり改良を進めている。また、簡便な精神鎮静法については、被験者によって好みが大きく異なるため、患者に応じた適切な方法の選択が望ましいと考えられたが、それらについても今後、検討が必要となることが明らかになった。
