研究目的は、福島県を研究のフィールドとしてがん診療連携拠点病院の全8施設の院内がん登録データとDPCデータを突合させた統合データベースを構築し、閉塞性右側結腸癌に対する大腸ステント留置例と緊急手術症例の長期予後を比較検討することである。3次医療圏（福島県）のがん拠点病院を対象に、閉塞症状を有しうる消化器癌に関するコホート研究を実施し、閉塞症状を呈する消化器癌の疫学的特性（発生頻度、罹患者数、症状と進行度の関連）、診療実態（治療前状態・治療内容・効果）、予後（再発率、生存期間）について詳細を調査することとした。本研究は、臨床試験によるエビデンスが構築しにくいが、しばしば遭遇する病態に対する悉皆性の高い調査研究であり、地域医療の現場に直結した有益な情報を提供することができると考えている。消化器癌患者の全体をカバーする地域医療の現場に根差したコホートを確立するために研究のフィールドは福島県全域におけるがん診療連携拠点病院とし、ステージII-IV消化器癌患者を対象患者とし登録・調査を行う。研究デザインは多施設共同の前向きコホート研究とする。研究初年度であり、研究組織・研究体制を確定した。福島県内のがん診療連携拠点病院は８施設あり、すべての施設で研究協力の承諾を得た。代表研究施設において研究倫理審査委員会への承認申請を行い、すでに承認を得た。現在研究協力施設７施設において、施設長の研究許可を申請中である。研究会議において調査項目と症例報告書を完成させ、実際に調査を開始した。福島県の2次医療圏（県北・県中・県南・会津・いわき・相双）をカバーする基幹病院での実施が可能な体制となっている。
