当初は、看護師へのインタビュー調査を予定していたが、訪問診療に看護師が同行することがどのように役立ち、医師が看護師にどのような役割を期待しているのかを明らかにするために、医師をインタビュー調査の対象に加える研究デザインに変更した。これらの調査を実施するための研究計画書を作成し、インタビューガイドを開発した。また、医師と看護師へのプレインタビューを実施し、インタビューガイドを洗練化した。次に、研究協力施設と研究参加者のリクルートのために、関連する学会への参加や委員会活動を通して、本研究の周知と協力依頼を行った。当初は、思うように協力者が見つからずに難渋したが、徐々に、岡山県、石川県、東京都、北海道とネットワークが拡がり、必要数の研究協力施設を得ることができた。加えて、リクルートが困難となることが予想された医師の研究協力者について、複数名の内諾を得ることができた。並行して、診療所の看護師と医師へのヒアリングを複数回実施し、看護師への随行を経験した。これによって、訪問診療への同行の実際を把握し、訪問診療に同行する看護師の役割と現状の課題について見識を深めた。
