本研究の目的は、マダガスカル南部のタマリンドが優占する川辺林が形成された要因を地域生態史の視点から解明することである。ドイツおよびマダガスカルとの国際共同研究を実施し、マダガスカルの南部と西部の森林を比較することで、タマリンドの分布と人間活動との関連を調べる計画である。今年度は8月頃にマダガスカルでの現地調査を予定していたが、その時点でマダガスカルを含むアフリカ地域には外務省による感染症危険情報レベル３が発出されていたため、現地調査を断念せざるを得なかった。そこで、渡航予定国の海外共同研究者と連絡をとりつつ、渡航準備を進めた。まず、マダガスカルにおける国際共同研究相手であるアンタナナリヴ大学の研究者と連絡をとり、次年度の渡航計画について相談した。同時に、マダガスカル西部のキリンディ森林における調査を実施するために、ドイツ霊長類センターの研究者と連絡をとり、次年度の7月から8月にドイツに渡航する計画、そして9月以降にマダガスカルにおける現地調査を共同で実施することを決定した。上記の渡航計画が決まった2月に交付申請をおこない、研究を開始した。現在のところ、研究項目のひとつである「熱帯地域におけるタマリンド生育状況のデータベース化」のための文献調査をすすめている。アジア・アフリカ地域を中心にタマリンドの利用について調べているが、現時点で集まった資料では、マダガスカルにおけるタマリンドの利用はアジア地域よりもアフリカ地域における利用に近いことが明らかになっている。
