本研究では、19世紀半ば以降に進展する、トランスナショナルな日本仏教の諸相と動向を、明治前期に欧米、南アジア、日本で出版・流布された仏教雑誌記事の内容を読解し、従来不十分であった双方向的な交流の諸相を明らかにし、日本仏教の近代化論を再検討することを目指している。研究遂行にあたり①英文雑誌分析班と②日本語雑誌分析班を設置したが、2022年度は①班の嵩と菊川は主にThe Bijou of Asia（日本:1888-1889）の読解を進め、杉本はThe Journal of the Mahabodhi Society(1892-1933)の読解を進めた。②日本語雑誌分析班では、中西と内手が主に『反省会雑誌』（日本：1887年-1899年）と同誌の英語版であるThe Hansei Zasshi(日本:1896-1898)の分析を進めた。①の成果としては、The Bijou of Asiaの目録の作成に加え、同誌の記事に名前が出てくる人物名を抽出し、その経歴等について追跡した。その上で、他の海外の雑誌等への投稿の有無を調査し記事の蒐集に努めた。杉本はダルマパーラの活動の分析を行い、成果の一端を「南アジアのスピリチュアルなナショナリズム」（2022年7月）として発表した。また①班では、プネ大学講師のPratap氏とストラスブール大学准教授Costanzo氏を招きダルマパーラとThe Journal of the Mahabodhi Societyに関する公開国際研究会を開催した（2022年7月）。②班の成果としては、中西がThe Hansei Zasshiの全原本の収集に努め、さらに同誌の内容を紹介するパネル展示（来年度実施）と図録の作成を行った。内手は『海外仏教事情』の読解を進め、①班と情報を交換しつつ、英文雑誌との内容との関連から窺われる双方向的な交流の諸相について分析した。
