本年度の研究実績として、本研究が対象とする中世の前段階である奈良時代や平安時代における神仏習合の様相について調査研究を進めた。奈良時代の神仏習合については、明治時代まで奈良・大神神社の神宮寺に安置されていた仏教彫刻を対象として過去に実施した調査で得た情報の整理を行なった。大神神社の神宮寺にはすでに奈良時代に仏教彫刻が安置されていたが、鎌倉時代になるとこの神宮寺で活動した僧侶たちによってもたらされた教学や思想、主に密教を介して神と仏の関係に新たな傾向がみられるようになった。大神神社の神宮寺が創建された奈良時代にはまだ日本には本格的な密教は伝わっていなかったため、密教を介した神仏習合の動きは、中世においてこそ生じたものといえる。また、平安時代の神仏習合については、京都の南山城地域に伝来する神仏習合にかかわる作例の実見を行なった。南山城は行政区分としては京都ではあるが、文化圏としては古代より奈良という特色のある地域で、この地域における神仏習合の様相を明らかにすることは深い意義がある。具体的には、現在、当該地域の寺院に伝わる平安時代の仏教彫刻のなかで、もともとは近隣の神社の神宮寺に安置されていた作例がいくつかある。また当該地域では鎌倉時代にいたると奈良の大寺院の僧侶たちが隠棲し、それに伴い神仏習合においても新たな動きがみられるようになった。このことは本研究を進める上で重要な事例であり、本年度は簡略な実見にとどまったが、今後より詳細な調査を実施していく。
