本研究では、近世の洛中洛外図屏風をはじめとした「都市・祭礼・風俗図」と、中世の「月次祭礼図屏風模本」や、社寺縁起、参詣曼荼羅、扇面に描かれた祭礼図などの構図の詳細比較によって、祭礼図における中世から近世への移行の様態について明らかにして、その差異から中世の「構図感覚」の変化を導き出すことを目的としている。その方法として、「月次祭礼図模本」の失われた左隻の想定図を構想することにより、上記課題を明確にしていきたい。令和4年度では、祭礼分野の描かれ方に注目して、歴史分野、美術史分野の検証を交えながら導かれる「中世に描かれたであろう祭礼・年中行事」の事象や図柄を手掛かりに、「月次祭礼図屏風」左隻に描かれていた可能性のある景観と祭礼行事を想定し、構図の再現を中心とした想定略図の作成を試みている。具体的には、復元本「月次祭礼図屏風」（右隻）に再検討を加えて、左隻に関わる事象の抽出を行った。加えて図像が最も近いものと考えられる「祭礼草紙」の資料化を行い、描かれた祭礼行事の分析を加えた。また画題が「月次祭礼図模本」と共通する可能性のある「京洛月次扇面流屏風」と、天慶三年屏風をはじめとした古代の屏風歌に採用された月次の行事の抽出を行い分析を加えた。「月次祭礼図模本」の再検討として構図法のほかに、描かれた景観に対する歴史学からの詳細分析を加えており、新知見が導き出される可能性が出てきた。ほか、15世紀から16世紀前半期におけるやまと絵屏風の構図法についての分析を行い、それらと中世の祭礼図である「月次祭礼図」、近世の都市図である「洛中洛外図」との比較検討を進めた。また令和6年1月に、京都工芸繊維大学で他科研との合同研究発表展を企画しており、その準備を進めている。
