项目摘要

本研究はDickensの8つすべての後期長編小説を包括的かつ網羅的に扱い、彼の男性観を次の3つの事柄―Self-Made Man、プロフェッショナリズム、そして帝国主義―に焦点を絞り考察することを目的としている。これらはDickensの男性観だけでなく、ヴィクトリア朝の男性観、特に中流階級の男性観を形成している重要な要素でもある。それゆえ、これらの3つ観点から考察することで、Dickensのみならずヴィクトリア朝の男性観についても新たな例証と見解を提示することを目指している。当初の計画では、今年度は、David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Our Mutual Friendを中心に考察し、Self-Made Manというヴィクトリア朝の理想の男性像に対するDickensの態度、特に彼の両価的態度を明らかにした上で、その矛盾を解明する予定であった。しかし、研究開始時点で個別に十分な論考ができていない4つの作品、David Copperfield, Hard Times, Little Dorrit, Our Mutual Friendそれぞれを、Dickensの男性観という観点から読み解くことから始めるべきだという考えに至り、本年度はまずHard Timesをヴィクトリア朝当時のプロフェッショナリズムとDickensの理想の作家像との関係から考察し、この小説から読み取れるDickensの男性観を明らかにした。次に、David Copperfieldにみられる作家という職業が内包する男性らしさと女性らしさ、さらに男性作家と女性作家の差異を探った。Hard Timesの考察は終了し、2本の論文が2023年中には国際誌で発表予定である。David Copperfieldの方は途中段階である。
